The New York Giants on Monday decided to make a stunning franchise move. They decided to bench quarterback Daniel Jones for Tommy DeVito. DeVito will start and Drew Lock will remain the backup quarterback.
Jones is going to be going from quarterback one to quarterback three on gameday. Head coach Brian Daboll felt like it was finally time for a change in the position. The Giants are 2-8 this season and are looking for a spark offensively for the remainder of the 2024 NFL season.
New York Giants Head Coach Brian Daboll Releases Statement After Benching Daniel Jones
Daniel Jones being benched is one of the biggest stories in the NFL on Monday in so many different ways. Head coach Brian Daboll told the media about why they decided to switch from Jones to DeVito at quarterback:
“We are making a quarterback switch from Daniel Jones to Tommy DeVito. After evaluating and watching a lot of tape, that’s the reason we are going with Tommy. Drew Lock will be the backup. This was a necessary move for us and I’m looking forward to working with Tommy and he’ll be ready to go against Tampa Bay.”
It is going to be interesting to see how Tommy DeVito will look in the final seven games of the 2024 NFL season. He won three games last season when Tyrod Taylor and Daniel Jones were sidelined due to injury.
The Bigger Picture
There is a much bigger picture for the Giants with Daniel Jones being benched in favor of Tommy DeVito. Head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen feel like they are not going anywhere after the 2024 season and will have the chance to draft the next Giants franchise quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft.
They do want to see if DeVito could be the backup quarterback for New York next year. Drew Lock and Daniel Jones will most likely be off the roster after the 2024 NFL season ends. There is a chance that the Giants may not win another game this season, but the major win for New York is being done with Daniel Jones for good.
