The Michigan Wolverines will begin the 2025 college football season on August 30 against the New Mexico Lobos at home. With the 2025 right around the corner however, schools are always looking ahead to schedule future games for years ahead for the program.

According to the Wolverines football Twitter page on Friday, they said,
“We are engaged in ongoing discussions to kick off the 2026 season on foreign soil, playing host to Western Michigan at Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt, Hesse, Germany, on Saturday, Aug. 29. This non-conference matchup would become the first game played by the Wolverines outside of North America.”
This would be a very interesting decision for the Michigan football program. A lot of Wolverines could potentially be upset about not having a true week one home game in 2026 against the Western Michigan Broncos. This would be a good decision for both programs to face each other since they are both within the state of Michigan. However, this potential overseas game could have ramifications.
Michigan Wolverines Fans React To Potential Overseas Game With the Western Michigan Broncos In 2026

To no surprise, the Michigan fanbase had a ton of reactions to potentially facing Western Michigan in Germany to begin the 2026 college football season. Some Wolverines fans said in confusion on Twitter:
This is dumb. Why. Stop now and save everyone’s time, energy, and money.

NCAA football has almost lost me altogether at this point, but this seems like a uniquely poor idea.

Is it going to be played on a Thursday or Friday to give players some time to recover?
A long flight back, getting home at a strange time on Sunday, exhausted and jet lagged, when you host Oklahoma the next week, is not a great plan.

There are a lot of Michigan fans who do not like this potential move for the football program. If they were the road team against another opponent, they probably would not have bashed this move as much. Because the Wolverines could potentially be losing a home game in 2026 with a game against Western Michigan in Germany, this is why the fanbase is upset.
