The LSU Tigers might not be having the season they were expecting, but the development of certain players is going beyond what they thought.
One such player for the LSU Tigers this season is Zy Alexander, who is a cornerback that originally played for Southeastern Louisiana. Alexander transferred in to the LSU program last season and recorded 44 total tackles for the team on a subpar defense that struggled against the pass. However, the true bright spot that Alexander offered was what he could do through the air and coverage before transferring into the LSU Tigers program.
Alexander had six interceptions in one season for Southeastern Louisiana and then recorded two in his first year with the Tigers in 2023. Altogether, the cornerback has 13 interceptions in his collegiate career and has even recorded two forced fumbles as well which displays his tackling power. However, there’s three things that Alexander has not done this season that stands out in particular for anybody who understands football.Missed tackles can be absolutely crucial and often times they can kill a defensive drive or in turn allow the offense the score. However, Alexander has not had a tackle broken this season and along with that he has also not allowed a first down. One more impressive accomplishment Alexander has had is that the cornerback has not had a penalty called on him all season.
While Alexander might look like a normal cornerback on paper, when diving deeper into his stats, then it can be seen that a fantastic player continues to blossom. The development of Alexander has been something that has largely gone unnoticed because of the struggles of both the team and coach Brian Kelly.
Whether fans of the LSU Tigers attribute the development of Alexander to Kelly or to another staff member, it is important to note that the Tigers are the program that was able to develop Alexander.
Could Zy Alexander Slip Into the NFL Draft After Developing With the LSU Tigers?
The cornerback still has time to add onto the great season that he has had, and could potentially make noise in the NFL draft, depending on what he is able to do in the final games.
At this time, Alexander does not seem like a sure-bet to go high in the NFL draft, but he certainly could be of value pick during the late rounds considering his raw talent. One part of the game of Alexander that often does not get mentioned is his high-motor play that is often on display. Alexander finishes plays and runs after players even when he has not real chance at catching them because the cornerback never gives up on a play.
