The 2019 LSU Tigers were one of the greatest college football teams of all time. They went 15-0 that season and defeated the Clemson Tigers in the national title game.

LSU had a lot of NFL talent on that team. It all started with quarterback Joe Burrow and wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson. All three of those players are absolute superstars at the NFL level today. Burrow was the number one overall pick by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2020 NFL Draft. Jefferson was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the same year as Burrow. As for Chase, he was drafted by Cincinnati in the top five in the 2021 NFL Draft. Where does LSU rank all time?

Stewart Mandel of The Athletic wrote an article about the 25 greatest college football teams over the last 25 seasons. A lot of people thought that LSU was going to be ranked number one on this list, but the Tigers were ranked number two instead. Mandel said,

“Consensus All-Americans: QB Joe Burrow, WR Ja’Marr Chase, S Grant Delpit, CB Derek Stingley Jr.

Signature wins: No. 2 Clemson (42-25 in CFP championship), No. 4 Georgia (37-10 in SEC championship), No. 6 Florida (42-28), No. 7 Oklahoma (63-28 in CFP semifinal), at No. 8 Alabama (46-41), No. 14 Auburn (23-20), at No. 25 Texas (45-38)

Playing the nation’s sixth-toughest schedule, the Tigers had only two games still in doubt in the last two minutes. Heisman winner Burrow led one of the most dangerous offenses of all time, with a receiving corps that included future All-Pros Chase and Justin Jefferson. They were just two of 30 eventual NFL draftees. The Tigers defense wasn’t elite (No. 31 in points allowed), but it didn’t need to be.

LSU is the only team in college football history to beat five of the final top eight teams in the AP poll — and it averaged 46 points in those five games.”

LSU being ranked number two by the Athletic was very interesting. The Athletic listed the 2001 Miami Hurricanes (12-0 record) as the number one college football team over the last 25 years.

When the Tigers faced the Crimson Tide that season, Alabama also had a lot of NFL talent on that team led by quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. That team had a lot of wide receiver talent led by Jerry Jeudy, Henry Ruggs III, Devonta Smith, and Jaylen Waddle.

LSU’s offense during the 2019 season under head coach Ed Orgeron was nearly unstoppable. Burrow won the Heisman Trophy during the 2019 college football season. He had one of the greatest college football seasons ever for a college quarterback. The Tigers 2019 championship team will not only be remembered or being one of the greatest teams in the last 25 years, but LSU’s team that season was one of the greatest teams of all-time.
