After a season of inconsistent quarterback play, the Michigan Wolverines have dipped into the transfer portal for a new passer. After visiting Ann Arbor this last weekend, former Fresno State Bulldog Mikey Keene has announced his commitment to the Wolverines.

Mikey Keene
In four years Keene has put up some impressive numbers through the air. 8,245 yards, 65 touchdowns, and 28 interceptions, while completing 67.8% of his passes. Keene already has experience playing in the Big House as Fresno State lost to Michigan 30-10 in week one. He had a solid game agains the Wolverines going 22/36 for 235 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions.
Considering the talent disparity compared to Michigan, the Bulldogs put up a good fight. The game was within reach until an 86-yard pick six by Will Johnson to seal the game.
Keene has one year of eligibility left, and he returns to an offense he’s familiar with. The offseason the Wolverines hired Chip Lindsey to be their offensive play-caller. These two have worked together before, as Lindsey was Keene’s offensive coordinator at Central Florida in 2022.
Who Will Start for the Michigan Wolverines
The Wolverines adding a veteran quarterback comes to no one’s surprise. After Alex Orji and Jayden Denegal entered their names into the portal, Davis Warren was the only Wolverine left on Michigan’s roster who’s thrown a pass in a college football game.
While Keene certainly has an edge over Warren on the Wolverines depth chart, it’s going to be tough Keene to start over Michigan’s prized recruit Bryce Underwood.
Underwood is the number one overall recruit in the 2025 class. After initially committing to LSU, Underwood flipped to Michigan after receiving an NIL deal that will pay him $10-$12 million over four years.
It’s hard to imagine Michigan will pay Underwood around $3 million in 2025 just to redshirt him.
Although Keene has a relationship with new offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey, the Wolverines made sure to OK their new play caller with Underwood.
But after a year of only 1,603 passing yards as a team Michigan should be happy to add a quarterback who’s eclipsed that mark three times. Even if he is a backup in 2025.
