On Monday, there were shock waves sent across the NFL when the New York Giants decided to bench Daniel Jones for the remainder of the 2024 season in favor of Tommy DeVito. Jones will not be the backup quarterback on game day. Drew Lock will continue to serve as the Giants’ backup quarterback.
During the 2023 offseason, the Giants decided to sign quarterback Daniel Jones to a four-year deal worth $160 million. During the same offseason, they decided to franchise tag running back Saquon Barkley.
Yahoo NFL Writer Dan Wetzel Thinks That the New York Giants Made a Massive Mistake Signing Daniel Jones Over Saquon Barkley
When the news came out that the Giants were benching Daniel Jones, many writers couldn’t wait to get to their laptops and write about the topic. Yahoo NFL Writer Dan Wetzel wrote an article that was titled:
“Anatomy of a franchise-killing decision: The day the Giants chose Daniel Jones over Saquon Barkley“
This is a very interesting title for an article about the state of the New York Giants organization. Some of the things he mentioned in the article were as follows:
“The Giants were cooked.
Barkley has been cast as a villain to New York fans, but in the end he wound up with far more guaranteed money and hasn’t appeared to have lost a step.
If anything, getting to a team with championship aspirations has reinvigorated his career. It was just two weeks ago, after all, he leaped backward over a defender, showing his athletic ability hasn’t dissipated.
Jones, meanwhile, has been a mess this season without his star ball carrier. His completion percentage has decreased to 63.3 percent from 67.5 percent the season before and he’s tossed seven interceptions against just eight touchdowns.
Whereas Barkley is averaging 5.8 yards per carry in Philly, the entire Giants run game is at just 4.4 yards per attempt without him.
Most notably, the Giants recently lost to lowly Carolina.”
Saquon Barkley this season with the Philadelphia Eagles has rushed for 1,137 yards on 197 carries and eight touchdowns, along with averaging 5.8 yards per carry. He is running behind a much better Eagles line this season than he did when he was with the Giants. Barkley was also injury-prone, which is something that Wetzel also forgot to mention.
Tyrone Tracy Jr. Numbers
For all of the criticism that the New York Giants get for getting rid of Saquon Barkley, Tyrone Tracy Jr. has been very effective as a rookie in the ground game. He was a fifth-round selection from the Purdue Boilermakers and will eventually be the starting running back for the Giants.
This season, he has rushed for 545 yards on 107 carries and three touchdowns, along with averaging 5.1 yards per carry. Tracy Jr. will be a good running back for the New York Giants moving forward. It’s time for everyone to forget about the Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley argument.
