“The Dead Body Was A Metaphor For Brock Purdy’s Career”: NFL Fans Crack Savage Jokes After Mac Jones Claims He Saw a Floating Corpse Before OT Win

Mac Jones woke up Thursday morning at the team hotel in Marina del Rey expecting the regular pregame routine. He spent the morning watching film, grabbing breakfast, and attending position meetings. Just the usual quarterback prep before a division showdown at SoFi Stadium.

What he saw from his hotel balcony that morning changed everything. The scene outside was something no film study could prepare you for, and Jones still had to be ready for kickoff in a few hours.

Jones stepped onto his balcony at the Marina del Rey hotel Thursday morning, looked down at the water, and spotted what he thought was debris. It wasn’t.

The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported that Jones told teammates he saw a dead body floating just below his room at the team hotel, located about 15 minutes from SoFi Stadium.

Someone called the police immediately. By the time the 49ers loaded buses for the stadium, investigators were pulling the body from the water while players watched from the hotel.

Jones had already processed one of the most disturbing sights imaginable, and he still needed to prepare for a division game against a desperate Rams team.

The 49ers entered Thursday Night Football as heavy underdogs. They were missing key players across the board. Brock Purdy was out with a shoulder injury, Christian McCaffrey didn’t play, Deebo Samuel was unavailable, and both Nick Bosa and Trent Williams were sidelined.

Kyle Shanahan handed the keys to Jones, a former first-round pick who flamed out in New England and spent 2024 as Jacksonville’s backup before landing in San Francisco.

Jones battled a sprained knee and a cramping forearm to complete 26 of 40 passes for 342 yards and two touchdowns. He hit Kendrick Bourne for key gains throughout regulation.

While the 49ers’ defense made a dramatic fourth-down stop to secure the win, fans couldn’t resist turning Brock Purdy’s rollercoaster career into dark comedy. They found humor in the high-stakes heartbreak of the Rams’ season.

NFL Fans Turn Tragedy Into Dark Comedy About Brock Purdy’s Career

Social media couldn’t resist the morbid irony once news broke about Jones’ morning discovery. One fan wrote, “The dead body was a metaphor for Brock Purdy’s career.”

Another added, “That’s why he was killing it out there…” The phrasing hit different given the circumstances.

A third observed, “Strange way to describe Purdy’s career.” The Purdy jokes kept rolling despite the grim reality of what Jones witnessed.

The fourth fan perfectly captured the absurdity, noting, “That’s a pregame horror movie.” The comment summed up the whole strange situation. Jones processed a shocking discovery and then stepped onto national television to deliver a career performance.

Jones now faces questions about keeping the starting job once Purdy returns. The 49ers are second in the NFC West behind the Seahawks.

Shanahan will need to make a decision soon about the quarterback position. Jones showed that he could handle pressure on and off the field for at least one night.
