The Detroit Lions finished with a 15-2 record during the 2024 NFL regular season and Detroit won the NFC North crown for the second season in a row. The Lions lost to the Washington Commanders in the NFC Divisional round.

Detroit has done a great job under head coach Dan Campbell turning this franchise around, but Campbell will have questions from the outside entering the 2025 season. The Lions lost offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to the Chicago Bears head coach position and also lost defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn to the New York Jets head coach position. Detroit is looking to win the NFC North crown for the third straight season and be in the Super Bowl conversation once again.
Detroit Lions Insider Believes That Dan Campbell’s New Offensive Coordinator and Defensive Coordinator Will Be Just Fine During 2025 NFL Season

The Lions have one of the best rosters in the NFL. Detroit will have a powerful offense this season and hopefully the defense won’t be decimated with injuries. If that all occurs, everything will come down to this coaching staff. With Johnson and Glenn out the door, many are wondering if Campbell will not be the same as a head coach.
Well, Colton Pouncy covers the Lions for The Athletic. He believes that the coaching staff is going to be just fine without Glenn and Johnson around anymore. Pouncy said,
“Dan Campbell’s new-look coaching staff looks the part. The Lions took it easy this offseason, canceling minicamp with the team starting training camp early because of the Hall of Fame game. Many of the vets were absent or excused for OTAs as a result. But the coaching staff was in full force, and the main takeaway after watching and hearing from them is that they’re all Dan Campbell guys.
That’s important, as the team lost key pillars in coordinators Aaron Glenn and Ben Johnson. Their replacements — defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard and offensive coordinator John Morton — have longstanding ties to Campbell and can effectively echo his message. Other new faces on staff have crossed paths with him or joined because they know what he’s about. It might take time to come together, but it’s clear Campbell has assembled a staff that knows how to work as one. “
It will be interesting to see how the defense will look different under Sheppard and how the offense will look different under Morton. Quarterback Jared Goff will look to be effective with Morton as he did with Johnson. Maybe the Lions defense will be a little more aggressive under Sheppard than it did under Glenn. Detroit is going to have high expectations entering the 2025 NFL season.
If Detroit gets off to a slow start and if Chicago and New York look different in 2025, there is a chance that many people will point to Campbell losing Johnson and Glenn. However, the truth is that the Lions still have a better roster and situation at the moment than Chicago and New York do because of the way the rosters are constructed.
