“The Bears Haven’t Been Any Better”: Chicago Bears Looking To End Super Bowl Drought In Caleb Williams’s Second NFL Season

The Chicago Bears fanbase has been so bent on the 1985 Bears team and they have not won a Super Bowl title ever since. Chicago fans are looking for success and a Super Bowl title.

The last time they were in the Super Bowl was during the 2006 season, but they lost to the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLI. Ever since, Chicago has been looking to return to its glory. With quarterback Caleb Williams entering his second NFL season, he hopes to lead the Bears back to the playoffs and Ben Johnson will be in his first season as head coach.

NFL Analyst Calls the Chicago Bears a Dysfunctional Organization Despite Being Ranked In Top 15 Entering 2025 NFL Season

Frank Schwab of Yahoo Sports is currently listing his preseason power rankings entering the 2025 NFL season. He has the Bears ranked number 15 in his power rankings entering the 2025 season. Chicago had a 4-2 record to start the 2024 season, but they finished with a 5-12 record.

This led to the Bears firing Matt Eberflus as head coach. Hopefully, things can change for Chicago with hiring Johnson as head coach and he was the Detroit Lions offensive coordinator for the last couple of seasons. Schwab had some interesting things to say about Chicago’s organization entering the 2025 NFL season and said,

“The Bears seemed reluctant to pay top dollar in its coaching search when it started, but eventually paid Ben Johnson handsomely to leave his job as the Detroit Lions‘ offensive coordinator. Johnson is one of the league’s most respected play-callers and the Bears hope that leads to a big improvement for Williams. The Bears also revamped their offensive line and then drafted tight end Colston Loveland in the first round and receiver Luther Burden III in the second round, giving the Bears a deep group of skill-position players.

With an exciting offensive-minded coach, a good offensive line, a fun group of pass catchers and the No. 1 pick from the 2024 draft at quarterback, if the Bears can’t get that elusive first 4,000-yard passing season, maybe the franchise is just doomed at the position.

While everyone has been quick to dunk on the Browns, Commanders, Panthers, Jets or some others for being among the NFL’s truly dysfunctional franchises, the Bears haven’t been any better. Winning a Super Bowl 40 years ago doesn’t change that much, and the fact that the 1985 Bears are still the first topic of conversation in Chicago speaks to how bad the team has been since then. The Bears have won six playoff games in the 39 seasons since Super Bowl XX.

The problems have generally started at quarterback. Since 1963, the only two Bears quarterbacks to make the Pro Bowl were Jim McMahon in 1985 and Mitchell Trubisky in 2018 … and Trubisky made it as a replacement.”

Schwab comparing the Bears organization to teams like the Jets, the Browns, the Commanders, the Panthers, and other franchises is certainly a choice. Chicago has won more division titles than New York and Cleveland combined since they last were in the Super Bowl in 2008. There is a delusion that Bears fans think that they are going to either win the Super Bowl or win the NFC North in 2025.

However, Chicago won’t be the favorites. The Detroit Lions will be the favorites to win the division, and they are also one of the favorites to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. The Minnesota Vikings will also be better than Chicago. Also, the only team Chicago might be better than in the NFC North is the Green Bay Packers.

During the 2024 NFL season with Chicago, Williams completed 62.5% of his passes for 3,541 yards, 20 touchdowns, and six interceptions. He has a chance to go over 4,000 yards passing during his second NFL season. Williams was 17th in the NFL in passing yards during the 2024 NFL season. He also rushed for 489 yards on 81 carries and zero touchdowns, along with averaging 6.0 yards per carry.

It will be important for Chicago to have a 9-8 or 10-7 season and knock on the door for a playoff berth. If Williams struggles in his second season with an offensive minded head coach, then there will be major questions about him entering the 2025 season and they could forget Super Bowl altogether.
