The “Backyard Brawl” Was An Absolute Classic

Wow. Where do you start in recapping the brawl that took place between West Virginia and #17 Pitt at Acrisure Stadium (Heinz Field)? To begin, the backyard brawl broke the Pittsburgh sports attendance record for Heinz Field (70,622)…the stage was set for a memorable night. Former Pitt QB Kenny Pickett was in attendance along with many other notable players.

    Game Recap:

In simple terms, it was a complete tale of two halves. The first half was a feeling out process for each offense. Each team only produced 10 points and it looked like it was going to be a low-scoring, defensive game. The second half was a totally different game. WVU set the tone early in the second half when they blocked a punt which led to a early-3rd quarter TD. Pitt responded with 2 TDS of their own, both coming on the ground. At the end of the 3rd quarter, WVU tied the game at 24-24 when QB JT Daniels threw a 16 yard pass to WR B. Ford Wheaton.

The 4th quarter was pure chaos as well. WVU got the ball right back after forcing Pitt to punt and went right down the field to make it 31-24. Again, Pitt responded with a 24 yard TD pass from QB Kedon Slovis to RB Israel Abanikanda to make it 31-31. The ensuing WVU possession is what turned the tide for the Pitt Panthers. JT Daniels threw a perfect pass to WR B. Ford Wheaton before it went directly off of his hands into the hands of Pitt defender M. Devonshire who took it into the end zone for a pick six.

WVU got the ball back down a TD, and time wasn’t on their side. After a few chunk gains, WVU found themselves around Pitt’s 20 yard line with under a minute left. On 3rd and 10, Pitt LB S. Dennis got his first sack of the game to force WVU to call a timeout with under 30 seconds left. WVU’s last attempt to get a first down and extend the game came oh so close. WVU WR R. Smith came down with a catch at the Pitt one yard line before it was reviewed and overturned.

Regardless of if you’re a Pitt or WVU fan, I think we can all agree that these two teams need to be playing each other every year. This game was an instant classic and the perfect setup for a great college football season. I mean, just look at the place after the ref overturns the catch. Absolutely nuts…
