The New York Giants made the playoffs during the 2022 NFL season with Saquon Barkley and Daniel Jones with a 9-7-1 record. They won a playoff game that season against the Minnesota Vikings before losing to the Philadelphia Eagles in the next round.

After the 2022 season, running back Saquon Barkley did not sign a long-term deal with the Giants. In 2023, New York did not have a good season, and they had a chance to trade him before the NFL trade deadline. Well, they didn’t trade him on a contract year. Instead, he signed with the Eagles after that season. Owner John Mara was not thrilled that he left New York to go to Philadelphia.
New York Giants Owner John Mara Did Not Want to Trade Saquon Barkley In His Contract Year

ESPN’s Jordan Raanan wrote a story on Thursday about how Giants owner John Mara did not want to trade Barkley during the 2023 season when things were not good for them. Mara responded to the trade request by saying,
“Nah, Saquon, I’m not going to do that. That makes no sense for us and, to be honest with you, it’s not going to be in your long-term best interest to do that. There is no way that I would allow them to trade you at this point. No. I’m just being honest with you.”
Had the Giants decided to trade him instead, there is no way he would have been with the Eagles. The Houston Texans and the Baltimore Ravens could have been two teams that Barkley could have been traded too. Barkley is thriving with Philadelphia, and it continues to make New York fans sick. The Giants problems over the last decade start with Mara and it is not a surprise he didn’t want to trade Barkley.
