The #1 Texas Longhorns are 4-0 entering SEC Conference play against the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Texas does not know if they will be starting Quinn Ewers or Arch Manning yet at quarterback against Mississippi State.
This will be the first time that the Longhorns will be playing an SEC Conference game. For now, it appears as if Texas may be the favorite to win the league.
Texas Longhorns Player Makes “This Is the Baby NFL” Statement
A few years ago, the Texas Longhorns and the Oklahoma Sooners were in the BIG12 Conference and announced they were going to join the SEC Conference. Well, the time is now for Texas to compete in the toughest conference in all of college football.
Longhorns running back Johntay Cook spoke to the media on Monday about playing in the SEC Conference. He said:
“This is the baby NFL, that’s what they call it. Just want to show them what we’ve got.”
The Texas Longhorns have looked good in out-of-conference play and now they will put it to the test in SEC Conference play. So far this season, Cook has rushed for 106 yards on seven carries and two touchdowns, along with averaging 15.1 yards per carry.
Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian also said about the team starting conference play this week:
“Literally business as usual. Like I said, we believe in our formula for success and what that looks like. We respect that this is our first SEC game at home. We’re going to embrace that side of it, but it’s not going to affect the way we prepare for the game and the way we go about our business in the game.”
Steve Sarkisian is not a stranger to SEC Conference games as well. He was on the coaching staff with Nick Saban with the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Crucial Back-to-Back Weeks In October
The most critical part of the Texas Longhorns schedule will be in October when they face the #21 Oklahoma Sooners and #2 Georgia Bulldogs in back-to-back weeks. Texas has struggled with Oklahoma lately, considering it is one of the biggest rivalry games of the season in college football. The Longhorns are much better on paper this season than the Sooners are, but rivalry games are always tricky.
As for the following week, it could be the game where it decides a potential spot in the SEC Championship Game for the Georgia Bulldogs and the Texas Longhorns. However, Georgia will have to take care of business first against the #4 Alabama Crimson Tide this weekend on the road. The Longhorns don’t have the toughest schedule in conference play and should be able to take of business before the college football playoff.
