The Texas Longhorns are looking forward to another week of college football games when they face the UTSA Roadrunners on Saturday night at home. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian has already made some bold statements to the media earlier this week.
He understands the importance of not overlooking any opponents and also respecting opponents. The Texas Longhorns had a big win last week on the road against the Michigan Wolverines.
Texas Longhorns Head Coach Steve Sarkisian Praises Freshman Wide Receiver Ryan Wingo Through the First Two Weeks Of the College Football Season
Steve Sarkisian met with the media on Wednesday to talk about his team. One of the things he talked about was freshman wide receiver Ryan Wingo. Wingo has played a huge role in this offense for the first two weeks of the college football season for the Texas Longhorns. Sarkisian said to Scott Salomon of Sports Illustrated:
“He’s a hard-working guy. He understands he doesn’t know everything. He wants to be coached and he takes tough coaching. But when you find out, how’s the guy gonna know that he might play early as he makes the plays when his opportunities come his way, and that showed up in the spring game. That showed up in our scrimmages in fall camp. He didn’t disappoint, you know, in week one, he made some explosive catches and then obviously last week in Ann Arbor, had the big reverse that got us inside the five-yard line.”
Ryan Wingo so far this season for the Texas Longhorns has caught four passes for 70 yards receiving. He has yet to reach the end zone either in receiving or rushing. Wingo has also rushed for 55 yards on one carry and that was against the Michigan Wolverines last week.
Isaiah Bond and Matthew Golden are the top two wide receivers on the roster along with tight end Gunnar Helm, who currently leads the team with 140 yards receiving. However, Sarkisian also added about the freshman wide receiver Ryan Wingo:
“I don’t know that our process for trying to prepare our receivers to play hasn’t changed a whole lot. We’re always trying to evolve. But, I think its beneficial for these guys now. … I just don’t know without statistics and knowing the science behind it. Are there truly more freshman playing or not? Or does it just feel like that because social media can promote it more?”
Ryan Wingo has a chance to be a star in this offense for the remainder of the season. He has shown flashes in the first two weeks of the season.
Other Freshman Studs Across College Football
There are other freshman stud wide receivers in college football. Jeremiah Smith of the Ohio State Buckeyes and Ryan Williams of the Alabama Crimson Tide are two other freshman wide receivers who have already made a name for themselves in college football and will continue to do so.
Head coach Steve Sarkisian hopes that Ryan Wingo will be talked about for the Texas Longhorns for the rest of the 2024 season. Even if Wingo doesn’t have the numbers like Smith or Williams this season with Texas, he will be a future star in this offense over the next couple of years.
