The Texas Longhorns will be preparing for their matchup against the UL-Monroe Warhawks on Saturday. They are the number-one ranked team in the country for the first time since 2008. With being the number one ranked team in the country, head coach Steve Sarkisian is going to be asked by the media about his quarterback situation often.
Arch Manning is preparing to start this week after Quinn Ewers suffered an oblique/abdominal injury last weekend against the UTSA Roadrunners. Texas won the game easily over UTSA 56-7. When both quarterbacks get healthy, it will be interesting to see who Sarkisian chooses as his starter.
Texas Longhorns Head Coach Steve Sarkisian Compares Arch Manning To Former Washington Huskies Quarterback Jake Locker
When Manning ran for his 67-yard touchdown run on Saturday night against the UTSA Roadrunners, it caught the attention of a lot of people. Steve Sarkisian spoke to Kevin Matthew Borba of Athlon Sports. Sarkisian mentioned how Arch Manning reminded him of former Washington Huskies quarterback Jake Locker.
Sarkisian said:
“He was a physical guy like Arch, really put together well, but he was a real runner and at that time, we weren’t very good, so I had to run him and it probably wasn’t fair to him. He got beat up some along the way.”
Jake Locker played for four seasons with the Washington Huskies. He was the eighth overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans. He was the head coach with Washington from 2008-2013. Sarkisian played a huge role in turning around the Washington Huskies program before leaving for the USC Trojans program following the 2013 college football season.
Sarkisian has turned around the Texas Longhorns football program over the last four seasons because of his recruiting. Having two elite quarterbacks Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning matters.
Texas Quarterback Situation
It will be interesting to see what happens later this season with the quarterback situation. Quinn Ewers is projected to be one of the top quarterbacks in the 2025 NFL Draft. As for Arch Manning, he is expected to be the starter next season for the Texas Longhorns and be one of the top quarterbacks taken in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Steve Sarkisian has a luxury at the position and many college football coaches don’t have that. There is no need to rush back Quinn Ewers from injury. Arch Manning is the starter for now.
