The Texas Longhorns reached the college football playoffs semifinals once again for the second straight season with Quinn Ewers as the starting quarterback. Ewers missed a couple of games last season due to injury and Arch Manning started a couple of those games.

Some Longhorns fans thought that head coach Steve Sarkisian should have started Arch Manning over Quinn Ewers for the remainder of the season. Texas lost to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the college football playoffs this year and will open up the 2025 season against them in Columbus, Ohio. Ewers has also declared for the 2025 NFL Draft.
Texas Longhorns Quarterback Quinn Ewers Had a Worse Injury Than Originally Thought During the 2024 Season

Josh Newman is a Texas Longhorns beat writer for lonestarlive.com. He reported on Tuesday on his Twitter page:
“NEW: Quinn Ewers played most of last season with a torn oblique muscle, not a strain as was once thought. That’s pretty ridiculous given the numbers he wound up posting in 14 games. Ewers, per sources, will throw this week at the NFL Scouting Combine:”
This could explain why Quinn Ewers struggled at times. Also if this was the case, why didn’t Sarkisian just ride with Manning as the starting quarterback instead of Ewers? That is a question that a lot of people will have to be asking themselves.
Last season, Quinn Ewers completed 65.8% of his passes for 3,472 yards, 31 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. Those are decent numbers despite the injury he had while playing for Texas.

Not shocked. He never looked quite right after the injury. Explains the tendency towards short passing game, too. I cracked a rib once and it hurt for months. Would expect a torn oblique to feel similarly unpleasant.

A muscle strain is a tear. The severity varies. https://t.co/F3CfYDjBj5 pic.twitter.com/Rd5p3tFYED

So he had a torn oblique and arch still couldn’t beat him out? Gotta be concerning if you’re a Texas fan

If true, no reason that Arch should not have been in against a dominant Georgia pass rush and on a lot more red zone plays. Loyalty is one thing. Strategy is another and this was not good strategy.
We had a great season but no way Saban is keeping a non runner with Oblique…

It remains to be seen how Ewers will perform at the NFL scouting combine. For now, he is not projected to be a first-round pick, but a lot could change. Some Texas Longhorns fans think that Arch Manning could be better than Quinn Ewers.
A lot will of this story will be told over the next year or so. This Ewers injury news dropping now has some Longhorns fans scratching their heads about what happened this past season.
