Texas football is just one of 11 teams remaining with an undefeated record. Last season, the Texas Longhorns won 12 games, their most since the 2009 season. Texas is enjoying a resurgence of elite play under head coach Steve Sarkisian, their leadman since the 2021 season. However, this year could be Sarkisian’s best, with the Longhorns eyeing their first national title since 2005. For his early season successes, Sarkisian joined a shortlist for the Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award.
On Wednesday, Sarkisian became one of 27 head coaches named to the Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award Watch List. Sarkisian won AP Big 12 Coach of the Year last season and earned the Broyles Award in 2020 while serving as the offensive coordinator for the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Texas Football HC Steve Sarkisian Named to Elite Award Watch List
According to the Paul “Bear” Bryant website, Texas football frontman Steve Sarkisian is one of 27 finalists for their Coach of the Year Award while being among those representing the SEC:
Southeastern Conference
Kalen DeBoer – University of Alabama
Mike Elko – Texas A&M University
Josh Heupel – University of Tennessee
Brian Kelly – Louisiana State University
Clark Lea – Vanderbilt University
Steve Sarkisian – University of Texas
Kirby Smart – University of Georgia
This season, Texas football owns an undefeated record behind head coach Steve Sarkisian. Under Sarkisian, the Texas Longhorns are the top team in the AP Poll Top 25 and have allowed just 6.3 points per game this season, the lowest average in the country. Meanwhile, Texas has been stellar on offense, scoring 43.2 points per game, and is fresh off a 34-point outing against rival Oklahoma.
Alongside Sarkisian, the SEC is represented by six other SEC coaches, including Georgia’s Kirby Smart. However, the Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award is given annually to a head coach for his successes on and off the field. Georgia continues to struggle with legal issues under the tutelage of Smart.
