Texas football has a fringe first-round quarterback in Quinn Ewers. Last season, the Texas Longhorns had 11 players selected in the 2024 NFL Draft, headlined by first-round picks Byron Murphy II and Xaiver Worthy. A speedster fresh off a 1,000-yard campaign, Worthy, alongside tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders, running backs Jonathon Brooks and Keilan Robinson, and wideouts Adonai Mitchell and Jordan Whittington, all left for the NFL, leaving the offensive skill position cupboard barren in Austin, Texas.
The lack of returns at pass-catcher positions has affected Ewers this season despite their stellar 5-1 start. However, the lack of veteran high-end playmakers was apparent last weekend, with Texas falling to the Georgia Bulldogs 30-15 at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium. Heading into this Saturday’s tilt against a ranked Vanderbilt Commodores squad, Ewers has a career-worst year in one major statistical category.

According to Joe Cook, the managerial editor of Inside Texas:
Quinn Ewers’ career average depth of target per
2022: 10.5 yards
2023: 8.4 yards
2024: 6.1 yards
In 2022, his first year with Texas football, quarterback Quinn Ewers threw for 2,177 yards and 15 touchdowns on 296 attempts. The following season, Ewers’ average target depth dropped slightly while he attempted 394 passes, completed a career-best 69% of his passes, and threw for 3,479 yards. However, his average depth of target has taken a significant hit in 2024, with his top five pass-catchers from the year prior gone.
Additionally, The Texas Longhorns moved to the SEC this season. Nevertheless, UT placed 2nd in the strength of schedule metric last year, while they are 32nd in SOS in 2024. Through five games, Ewers is 103-for-151 for 1,101 yards, 11 touchdowns, and four interceptions.
