On Saturday, in their opening act following a College Football Playoff berth, the Texas football team downed the Colorado State Rams 52-0. Texas dominated for 60 minutes, with CSU failing to surpass 200 total yards while going a combined 3-of-14 in third and fourth down efficiency. Starting quarterback and Heisman Trophy Award contender Quinn Ewers had a phenomenal encore to a stellar 2023 season, going 20-of-27 for 260 yards and three touchdowns.
With Texas holding a commanding 38-point lead midway through the third quarter, the Longhorns turned to their backups, highlighted by former five-star recruit and quarterback Arch Manning taking over under center. Manning completed both passes in his first drive, concluding with a five-yard passing touchdown, the first in his college career.
Texas Football QB Arch Manning Delivers First Career College Touchdown
On the second drive of the third quarter and up more than five touchdowns, Texas football deployed redshirt freshman quarterback Arch Manning. On the first play, UT called a play-action pass, with Manning rolling to his right before firing a dot to Johntay Cook on a corner route. Cook stopped on a dime, turned upfield, and outran several defenders for a 40-yard gain. On his next pass, Manning took the shotgun snap but, after finding nobody open, stepped up in the pocket before maneuvering to his right. Before crossing the line of scrimmage, Manning shoveled the ball to Silas Bolden, who straddled the sideline for a five-yard touchdown reception.
Manning joined Texas football last season as the top high school quarterback in the country, per 247Sports. He sat behind incumbent starter Quinn Ewers in 2023, going 2-of-5 for 30 yards in limited action. The nephew of NFL greats Peyton and Eli Manning, the youngest Manning, stayed at Texas for the 2024 season despite Ewers returning. Manning finished Saturday’s contest 5-fo-6 for 95 yards and a touchdown. He also ran three times for a score.
