Houston Texans running back Joe Mixon has entered the 2025 NFL season with mixed reviews after a solid first year in Houston. While his production remains strong, concerns about his durability and late-season performance have raised questions about his long-term role in the Texans’ backfield.

Mixon rushed for over 1,000 yards and scored 11 touchdowns in 2024, cementing his role as a key contributor for Houston. Despite these numbers, an NFL talent evaluator noted that Mixon appeared worn down toward the end of the season, which could impact his ability to sustain high-level performance. As he approaches his ninth NFL season, maintaining consistency will be critical.

The Texans added veteran running back Nick Chubb to their roster, signaling a possible shift toward a shared workload in 2025. This could help Mixon remain effective by reducing his carries and preserving his energy throughout the season. However, it also introduces competition for touches in a backfield that already includes other capable players.

Mixon has been praised for his vision, footwork, and ability to generate tough yards, which have made him a valuable asset. Yet, his career average of 4.1 yards per carry suggests he’s not a home run hitter, and his declining explosiveness could become a concern. His performance in training camp and early-season games will be closely monitored.

NFL Analysis Gets Real on Houston Texans Running Back Joe Mixon

Mixon received a blunt review from a talen evaluator ahead of the 2025 season. This can be seen in an analysis by Jeremy Fowler for ESPN.

Mixon looked rejuvenated in Houston after the Texans acquired him in a trade with Cincinnati in March 2024. He’s not a home run hitter, with a career average of 4.1 yards per carry over eight seasons. But he’s got just about everything else.

“Really good vision, feet, contact balance — a hammer in the run game,” an NFL personnel evaluator said. “Looked worn down at the end of the season, but overall that was a really good trade for Houston.”

Despite the critiques, Mixon remains one of the top 10 running backs in the league, as ranked by NFL executives and scouts. His ability to lead Houston’s ground game while balancing a potentially reduced workload will determine his impact this season.

As the Texans aim to stay competitive in the AFC South, Mixon’s performance will play a pivotal role. Whether he can overcome late-season fatigue and maintain his standing among the league’s best remains to be seen.
