On Tuesday, the Tennessee Volunteers suspended linebacker William Mohan. The suspension comes on the heels of Mohan’s arrest on Sunday on a felony domestic aggravated assault charge. A spokesperson from Tennessee’s athletics department issued a statement confirming, “We are aware of the recent arrest of football student-athlete William Mohan. He was immediately suspended indefinitely from all team activities.”

Trouble Off-Campus
According to a report from the Knoxville Police Department, authorities responded to a domestic disturbance on Saturday but arrived after Mohan had left the premises. A woman informed officers that she had invited Mohan over and realized he was intoxicated when he arrived. She told officers that she tried to rush Mohan to her room to avoid waking her roommates. She reported Mohan tried to initiate sexual intercourse with her and became aggressive when his advances were denied.
In the report, the woman stated Mohan grabbed her face with one hand and used the other hand to choke her and pull her toward him. She stated that she pulled away from Mohan’s grip and demanded that he leave. The woman reported that Mohan refused to leave, so she went to the kitchen and got a knife.
Upon reentering the bedroom with the knife, the woman told police, she again asked Mohan to leave. She stated he grabbed her by the throat with one hand and took the knife away with the other. Per her report, her roommate then entered the room and told Mohan to leave.
The police report states that Mohan did eventually leave. However, he later began knocking on the door and calling the woman’s name. The woman let Mohan back into the residence where he passed out on the couch, She told police that she then started calling numbers in Mohan’s phone trying to find him a ride home.
A warrant was issued for Mohan’s arrest, and police arrested him the next day.

On-Field Ramifications
A redshirt sophomore, Mohan transferred to Tennessee from Michigan before the 2021 season.
He spent last season playing primarily on special teams, appearing in 12 games and finishing the season with nine tackles. Mohan also served as a reserve linebacker for the Vols and was favored to contribute significantly this season.
But, these accusations are very serious and the Vols must treat them accordingly. As such, the Tennessee Volunteers have suspended Mohan indefinitely from all team activities.
A preliminary hearing is set for September 16th.
