The Tennessee Titans‘ depth at wide receiver is being tested this preseason.
During Wednesday’s practice, receiver Treylon Burks went down hard after making a catch and appearing to favor his hip area before heading inside to the locker room, according to multiple reporters on the scene.
While Tennessee spent significant resources looking to bolster the receiving corps this season, there had been some optimism this spring and summer that Burks was turning a corner and could carve out a role for himself this fall.
“He’s going to have to contribute,” Titans head coach Biran Callahan told reporters earlier this spring. “You know you only get so many hats on game day, and if he’s one of those guys on game day, we’re going to have to find a place for him. Guys like him should be great special teams players on top of it, just because of his size and speed. And so the gunner thing is something I think he’s very capable of doing, there might be some more roles for him in the other phases, as well.”
Burks has caught just 49 passes for 665 yards and one touchdown since being chosen in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft by Tennessee.
Given Burks’ lack of development, the Titans have added veterans DeAndre Hopkins and Tyler Boyd the past two offseasons.
So far this summer, Burks has accounted for 12 receiving yards during the preseason.
Meanwhile, Hopkins suffered a knee injury early in camp that has sidelined him for much of the summer, but, Callahan and the Titans are confident that the 32-year-old star will be available when the regular season kicks off in September.
