It isn’t just the LeBron James-led squad that dominated in the Olympics as Team USA Women’s Basketball team also did that same. Their big win in Paris prompted former NFL star Robert Griffin III to react and express his thoughts on the matter.
The United States women’s basketball team overcame a late scare from the host nation France to claim their fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal in dramatic fashion. Despite France’s Gabby Williams hitting a buzzer-beater two-pointer to make it a one-point game in the closing seconds, the Americans held on for a 67-66 victory.
Williams, the former UConn standout, put forth a valiant effort for the French side, leading the team in scoring with 19 points. Her three-pointer with five seconds remaining made it a one-point game, but Kahleah Copper’s clutch free throws ultimately sealed the win for the U.S.
The triumph extends the American women’s basketball team’s Olympic gold medal streak to eight, dating back to the 1996 Atlanta Games. The last time they failed to win gold was in 1992 when they settled for bronze in Barcelona.
While the French team’s last-second heroics nearly forced overtime, the U.S. squad’s composure and experience proved to be the difference in a closely contested battle. The thrilling conclusion to the women’s basketball tournament capped off an Olympic Games that showcased the depth of talent and competitiveness in the sport on the global stage.
Former NFL Star Robert Griffin III Reacts To Team USA Women’s Basketball Gold Medal Win in the Olympics
After the game, different personalities were hyped over the women’s squad and their historic win in Paris. Among those who were hyped by the occasion was former NFL star Robert Griffin III, as seen in a tweet he posted on his official X account.
“USA Women’s Basketball just won their 8th straight Olympic Gold Medal.
Talk about complete and utter dominance of a sport.
USA Women’s basketball is so dominant that they didn’t even have to play decent basketball in the Final against France and still won.
There are many factors that lead to this dominance.
-Population pool to draw from
-Advancements and access to high level training
-Major emphasis on sports and entertainment in the USA
-EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN’S PARTICIPATION IN SPORTS AND THEIR OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE IN AMERICA.America has a lot of problems to fix, but providing women with an opportunity to excel in sports is something we do better than anyone else.
Now let’s sit back and enjoy Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese in what is and will continue to be the most closely followed Rookie of the Year battle the WNBA has ever seen,” Griffin tweeted.
As it stands, Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark is a heavy favorite at -2000 to win the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year award over Angel Reese of the Chicago Sky, who is at +700. Both rookies were named WNBA All-Stars this season.
The U.S. women’s basketball team’s victory over France in the Olympic gold medal game cemented their legacy as one of the most dominant international teams in history. And with that huge victory breaking barriers in sports, much like how Griffin reacted, the momentum is clearly on the side of the A’ja Wilson-led team as they make their way to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
