Tashaun Gipson Sr. woke up to some unwanted news last Tuesday when the league announced he was set to be suspended for the first 6 games of the upcoming 2024 season.
At the time, he was the first and only player to face a suspension for this season, although he has since been joined by Cameron Sutton, who will miss 8 games after violating the NFL’s player conduct policy.
Former San Francisco 49ers Veteran Safety Suspended For 6 Games In 2024
Gipson Sr. was suspended under different circumstances, with league sources simply stating that he had broken the performance enhancing substances policy, with little further explanation.
Those around the league were unsure as to whether Tashaun Gipson Sr. would have the desire to continue playing football in light of his suspension, or even if teams would be willing to re-sign him with potential question marks surrounding what some had believed might have been intentional doping.
Today, however, Gipson released important remarks concerning the true nature of the reasons behind his breaking of conduct, and graciously accepted his ensuing suspension, per Adam Schefter.
Free-agent safety Tashaun Gipson, who was suspended six games due to a violation of the performance enhancing substances policy, said he intends to return this year for his 13th NFL season.

Tashaun Gipson Sr. Denies Intentional Use Of Performance Enhancing Substances
Tashaun Gipson Sr. maintained his innocence in asserting he unintentionally ingested a supplement that, in actuality, contained an ingredient on the NFL’s banned list.
This is not the first time that an NFL player has faced a suspension for accidentally consuming banned substances in recent years, but players are routinely told to make sure that they check with trainers and experts before commencing new supplements.
And whilst, obviously, you and only you are responsible for what you consume, Gipson takes accountability for his actions, stating:
“The NFL’s policy on performance enhancing substances is clear, and I take full responsibility for anything I put into my body.
It is with great disappointment that I accept this suspension, and I do so knowing that I have never even attempted to cheat the game.”
The way in which the former San Francisco 49ers safety took his suspension on the chin; a suspension that theoretically could sting particularly hard due to Gipson’s perhaps limited time left in the professional game at 33 years old; was clearly gallant and humble, not complaining about it being an accident or asking the league to reconsider his punishment.
As a result, it could well be that a team is more likely to sign him after this debacle, giving how professionally and cordially he has handled this setback. Especially if that team is a contender looking for some veteran leadership on the back-end of their defense at some point during the middle of the season.
He may yet not play at all this season. But in this statement and reaction to suspension, it would seem unlikely that not a single team would take a flyer on the ex Pro Bowler.
