SMU QB Tanner Mordecai led the Mustangs to an 8–4 record in 2021. This season, he calls signals for a new head coach in offensive guru Rhett Lashlee. Lashlee named Mordecai the starting quarterback for the 2022 season.
Mordecai transferred from Oklahoma, where he passed for 602 yards and 4 TDs in 10 games with the Sooners.
In 2021, he posted seven games with over 300 yards passing. Also, Mordecai posted one game over 400 yards (427 yards, 3 TDs in a 56–26 win over Tulane).
He threw for 317 yards and seven touchdowns, and zero INTs in a win over Abilene Christian.
Mordecai posted three games with four passing touchdowns and three games with three passing TDs. He threw five touchdown passes against La. Tech (and 395 yards in a 39–37 win). He was named 2nd Team All-AAC.
Mordecai has a dependable target returning in WR Rashee Rice. Rice caught 64 of Mordecai’s passes for 670 yards and nine touchdowns.

Mordecai has been named to several watchlists for 2022: the Walter Camp Player of the Year, the Maxwell Award, and the Davey O’Brien Award.
He is named to preseason All-AAC teams, such as 2nd Team by Phil Steele and 1st Team by Athlon’s. Mordecai also landed on the Pro Football Focus Top 50 QBs (#20), and the College Football News Top 30 Players (#9).
