Syracuse quarterback and senior team captain Garrett Shrader underwent a successful procedure for an injury to his right arm that will cause him to miss spring practice, the school’s athletic program announced late Monday. The dual-threat signal-caller has been productive the past two seasons as a starter, throwing for more than 4,000 yards and 26 touchdowns and rushing for 1,234 yards and 23 more scores.
“I’m disappointed to miss the rest of the spring, but looking forward to rehabbing and getting ready for this upcoming season,” Shrader said in a school press release.

Shrader played his first two seasons of college football in the SEC, starting four games and playing in 10 games for Mississippi State in 2019 as a true freshman. He finished the year with 1,170 yards passing and eight touchdowns while rushing for 587 yards and six touchdowns. But in an abbreviated CoVid fall of 2020, he only played in only one game and threw no passes — leading him to transfer north to Syracuse.
The 6-foot-4 Shrader is a Charlotte, N.C. native, playing his high school football at Charlotte Christian.
Heading into spring ball, five quarterbacks are listed on the current Syracuse roster. The other quarterback with the most experience who seems he will get the best opportunity in Shrader’s absence is 2022 Florida transfer Carlos Del Rio-Wilson, who played substantial snaps against Notre Dame and Pitt last year as a backup to Shrader — finishing with 342 yards passing and a touchdown.
The other three signal callers have little to no experience and were freshmen in 2022.
Syracuse will begin spring practice on March 21 and will hold its spring game on Apr. 21. The Orange will kick off 2023 with four non-conference games — three at home — against Colgate, Western Michigan, Purdue, and Army before playing host to national powerhouse Clemson in their ACC opener on Sept. 30.
