There’s no argument against the Kansas City Chiefs putting together the greatest three-year run in NFL history — if they defeat the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 59.
That would give Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs three straight titles and they would become the first NFL team to accomplish the feat. But how do the Chiefs rank among the greatest three-year runs in NFL history before the big game?
A team must have participated in two Super Bowl games in three years to qualify for this list.
49ers from 1988-90 currently rank at the top of the list
The 1988-90 San Francisco 49ers had a team like no other before the Chiefs came into the picture. They have to battle to win their first Super Bowl, a 20-16 last-minute victory over the Bengals.
But they steamrolled to the back-to-back version. They whipped the Vikings (41-13) and Rams (30-3) before putting a 55-10 beat-down on the poor Broncos in the Super Bowl.
And in 1990, the 49ers made another run. They pounded Washington (28-10) to reach the NFC Championship game against the New York Giants. And they held a 13-9 lead going into the fourth quarter. Still ahead 13-12 with the clock closing in on the two-minute mark, a 49ers fumble gave the Giants one last chance. They took advantage with Matt Bahr’s game-winning 42-yard field goal.
San Francisco had a record of 38-10 over three regular seasons. The 49ers went 7-1 in the playoffs.
