    Steelers’ Secret Weapon This Season

It is not who you think it is.

Head coach Mike Tomlin will have his hands full this season trying to figure out which quarterback is best fit to maximize the offensive weapons he has.

Pittsburgh fans definitely want the story to be about Kenny Pickett this season. Maybe you are one of those people that want to see TJ Watt win defensive player of the year again. Yet, there is truly only one man who will be the difference maker this season. There is just one guy in the organization that can harness the Steelers potential. This man is not who you are expecting.

Mike Tomlin is the Pittsburgh Steelers’ secret weapon this season. Tomlin has all of the sudden become one of the grandfather type coaches in the NFL. I don’t say the because of his age, but rather his vast experience and wisdom about the game. Tomlin is entering his 16th season at the helm for the Steelers, making him the second longest tenured coach in the NFL. The Steelers have been successful in the Tomlin era, and perhaps even more consistent. In fact, Mike Tomlin has never had a losing record as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Amazingly, Tomlin didn’t have to go with any other quarterback his first 15 years as head coach.  Of course, that was because of a guy named Ben Roethlisberger. Yes, there were weeks here and there where Ben was injured. Most of the time, Tomlin had backup guy who was hardly competing with anyone else. Over the years, Tomlin owns an 18-15-1 record when Ben Roethlisberger did not start at quarterback. When Ben went down a few years ago, it was Devlin “Duck” Hodges that came in for a stretch of games. Last season, it was Mason Rudolph who came in and tied the Detroit Lions. Year prior saw the likes of Mike Vick, Josh Dobbs, and Landry Jones as the substitute quarterback. The 2022-23 season holds remarkable challenges for Mike Tomlin from the quarterback position.

Moreover, this season is Tomlin’s chance to truly cement himself as the greatest Pittsburgh Steeler coach of all time. He will be faced with tough decisions about which quarterback is the guy for each given week. For years if Ben had a bad game, Tomlin didn’t have to question whether Ben was going to be ready the next week. Ben was the starter. There were no ifs, ands, or buts about it. This season is going to be a complete flip of that.

No matter who the Steelers starter is to begin the season, Tomlin will most likely be forced into making changes at some point. Tomlin has stated in talks with the media that Mitch Trubisky will be the starter for the Steelers to begin the season. Of course, Trubisky shouldn’t feel that comfortable because he has Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph on his tail for his starting position. Fans all around the league will see why Mike Tomlin is not just one of the best coaches in the NFL right now, but of all time. Tomlin will be the Steeler’s secret weapon this season and it’s about time people start talking about it.
