The recent trade between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Miami Dolphins has garnered significant attention and praise from analysts across the league. The move, which involved the franchise acquiring cornerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith in exchange for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, has been met with high grades from various sports outlets.

This trade not only addresses immediate needs for Pittsburgh but also signals their aggressive push for success in the upcoming season. Experts have noted that acquiring Ramsey adds a crucial element to the Steelers’ defensive strategy.

With his extensive experience and proven track record as a three-time Pro Bowler, Ramsey can enhance the secondary, which struggled in previous seasons. His ability to play both outside and in the slot allows the Steelers to utilize him in multiple roles, providing flexibility and depth to their defensive lineup.

Additionally, the inclusion of Jonnu Smith offers another layer of offensive capability. Smith’s familiarity with the team’s offensive coordinator, having worked with him in the past, allows for a smoother integration into the team’s system. This connection could effectively boost the performance of the tight end position, which has been a focus for improvement following the loss of other key offensive players.

On the other hand, the Dolphins’ decision to trade away Ramsey and Smith has raised concerns about their defensive and offensive depth. While the acquisition of Fitzpatrick strengthens the safety position, Miami risks losing significant talent in Ramsey, who was a standout performer. Critics argue that this trade may weaken the Dolphins in the short term, especially against high-caliber offenses.

Pittsburgh has come out on top with a high grade after their trade with the Steelers. This is detailed more in an article by John Breech for CBS Sports.

    Steelers: A-

Offensively, the addition of Smith makes a lot of sense. The Steelers now have another tight end to complement Pat Freiermuth. Not to mention, Smith is incredibly familiar with Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, who served as Jonnu’s tight ends coach in Tennessee during his rookie season in 2017. Overall, the two Smiths have spent a total of five seasons together with two different teams (Titans and Falcons). Since Jonnu already knows the offense so well, it should be easy for him to fit in.

Financially, this deal won’t break the bank for the Steelers. Ramsey doesn’t have any guaranteed money left after the 2025 season, according to Over the Cap (Ramsey will make a total of $26.6 million this year after getting a $1.5 million raise from the Steelers, according to NFL.com). As for Smith, he’s getting a one-year, $12 million extension, which means he’s now under contract for the next two years at $16 million.

The financial aspect of the trade also plays a critical role. The franchise is taking on Ramsey’s substantial contract while gaining valuable assets. This move reflects their commitment to maximizing their Super Bowl window, especially with veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers leading the charge.

Pittsburgh’s trade with the Dolphins has been positively received, highlighting Pittsburgh’s strategic approach to strengthening their roster. Analysts agree that this deal could significantly impact the upcoming season, positioning Pittsburgh as a serious contender in the AFC.
