It’s officially the end of an era for the Pittsburgh Steelers, parting from a piece of the franchise that has been synonymous with the team for as long as I can remember. Surprisingly I’m not talking about Ben Roethlisberger here. Since 2001 the Steelers have battled in the iconic Heinz field following the teardown of the old Three Rivers Stadium. However, the food processing company has decided not to renew its naming rights agreement for next season, leaving the stadium as a free agent of sorts.
Steelers Fans and the Importance of Heinz Field
While it may seem like just a name, Steelers fans love Heinz field. It is the pinnacle of sports for a football city and is the colosseum in which Pittsburgh legends have fought many battles. Over the years, the Steelers have conquered windy conditions, AFC North rivals and massive playoff games inside the confines of Heinz field. One of the NFL’s most storied franchises, few atmospheres can match that of Heinz field. With fans waving their Terrible Towels to cheer on their hard-nosed football team, Heinz field is a name opponents dread. The connection that fans feel to their team and their stadium is unlike many others. Fans in Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania live for the black and yellow, making these changes so monumental.
What’s Next for the New Name of the Steelers’ Stadium
While it may seem to be a little late for a new name deal to be negotiated, there will probably be a new deal announced in the next week or so according to CBS Sports’s Andrew Fillipponi. This is likely due to a couple of different factors, all of which involve money. First, naming deals are still in high demand as a surefire way to market for companies, especially with the popularity of the NFL. Second, the Steelers can’t afford to wait around to find the perfect name or create a bidding war. I don’t think any Pittsburgh fan would argue with an Art Rooney Stadium in honor of the great Rooney family. However, we also can’t argue with the $57 million deal that they had with Heinz and the money that a new deal would bring in. The Steelers will most likely arrive at training camp with a new stadium name. We’ll sure miss Heinz field, but we’ll be ready to see what the new era brings for the Steelers.
