After a quiet start to their 2023 recruiting cycle, Stanford added their second prospect this week. Tight end Walker Lyons announced his pledge to David Shaw’s program. The four-star athlete becomes the Cardinal’s top verbal commit. He chose Stanford over BYU, Ohio State, Utah, and USC.
Shaw offered Lyons a scholarship in June 2020, and the prospect returned a year later for an official visit. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound TE is a California native, so he will continue his football career in his home state.
Tight ends coach Morgan Turner receives credit for reeling in Lyons. In his Stanford tenure, he’s coached an impressive group of tight ends that includes Zach Ertz, Dalton Schultz, Austin Hooper, and more. Lyons looks to join the impressive group of TEs to develop their skills and enter the NFL.
A Peek at Walker Lyons
The rising senior attends Folsom High School in Folsom, CA. Lyons caught 42 passes for 646 yards and seven touchdowns in his junior season. He averaged just over 15 yards per catch.
On ESPN’s Class of 2023 Top 300 list, Lyons sits at No. 98. Although he is the fifth-best overall tight end, he is listed as a TE-Y, where he ranks first in the position. TE-Y is a tight end that lines up with the offensive line as an extra blocker but also presents a threat to receive the ball. Lyons possesses an 84 scout grade.

In Conclusion
With Walker Lyons’ commitment, the Cardinals add their 12th recruit and now rank 35th on the 247Sports national recruiting list. Shaw’s program totals six four-star and five three-star athletes.
Stanford finished 3-9 last year, with a 2-7 record in conference play. After a disappointing 2021 season, Shaw looks to guide the Cardinals to a bounce-back campaign and win the program’s 16th conference title.
