Coach Will Hall and the Southern Miss Golden Eagles defeated the ULL Cajuns 39-24  in Hattiesburg, Oct. 27, 2022. Tonights victory marks ten straight for the Eagles.

Southern Miss QB Zack Wilcke turned the ball over on the opening possession of the game.  This early turnover did not stifle crowd at M.M. Roberts Stadium. The Eagles defense showed up and showed out in the first half allowing only five points.

The Eagles were able to strike on offense thanks to a 52 yard pass by running back Frank Gore Jr. Ty Mims reeled in the pass to put Southern Miss up 12-2 in the first quarter.

The Eagles offense was not done, later in the first half, freshman QB Zach Wilcke connected with Jason Brownlee for a for 76 touchdown pass, putting the Eagles up by 15.

    The Nasty Bunch Showed Up

The Eagles defense played lights out in the first half against ULL. The Golden Eagles held ULL to five points after 30 minutes of football. Two of those points came from a blocked extra point in the first half.

Southern Miss racked up 74 total tackles and allowed 439 yards. The Golden Eagles racked up three interceptions.

This season the Eagles the have relied heavily upon their defense in their wins against Tulane, and Arkansas State. Despite Will Hall being known as an offensive coach, the Golden Eagles defense has made the difference this season.

So far the Eagles have only allowed an opponent to score 30 points this season, that number came earlier in the season on the road against Miami.

How Will the Southern Miss Finish the Season

Overall  USM is now 5-3 on the year and one win away from securing a bowl bid. This would be the first bowl bid in a true season during the Will Hall era at Southern Miss.

A bowl bid will provide a little faith for the USM faithful and possibly pull a little pressure off the back of head coach Will Hall.

Southern Miss still has four games remaining on the season and the possibility of finishing the season with a 7-5 record. If USM can keep their defense playing strong the Golden Eagles have the chance of going 8-4.

One thing is for sure Southern Miss is on a three game win streak and are looking to add win number six when they face Georgia State the first week in November.

    A Look At Whats Ahead

Week 9 of the College Football season will not disappoint. The Southern Miss Golden Eagles started the week of right and the rest of the SBC knows this team means business.
