The South Carolina State Bulldogs (1-2) of the MEAC traveled to take on the North Carolina A&T Aggies (1-3) of the Big South Conference. The Bulldogs are coming off a 2021 Championship season winning the MEAC and Celebration Bowl Championship against Jackson State last year.
The Bulldogs got back on a winning track and won their first game of the season against Bethune Cookman University of the SWAC. The Aggies were coming off a defeat by the hands of the Duke Blue Devils of the FBS level Atlantic Coast Conference.
The rivalry between the Bulldogs and the Aggies date back to 1924. The Bulldogs lead the series with a record of 33-24-2.
Bulldogs Recap
The Bulldogs opened the scoring with a touchdown pass from QB Corey Fields to WR Rakim White from 21-yards away. The Aggies tied the score with a touchdown of their own at 7-7.
The second quarter scoring opened with another touchdown pass from QB Corey Fields to WR Richard Bailey with a missed extra point. The Aggies responded by scoring 10 points with a field goal and a touchdown just before halftime for a 17-13 Aggie lead.
In the third quarter the Aggies scored three touchdowns and the Bulldogs scored two. Bulldogs QB Corey Fields threw the two touchdown passes. The first one was to WR Shaquan Davis from 33 yards away. The second touchdown pass was from five yards away to RB Jacory Benson. Fields finished 29 of 46 for 316 yards four touchdowns and only two picks. WR Shaquan Davis finished with 127 yards receiving.
The fourth quarter featured a field goal by the Aggies to bring the final score to 41-27
Bulldog Defensive Leaders
The Bulldogs defense was led by LB BJ Davis with 17 tackles and second was Duane Nichols with eight tackles. LB Aaron Smith was third with seven tackles.
It is always exciting when two rival schools get together and this one did not disappoint. While it wasn’t a victory for the Bulldogs you never underestimate the heart of a champion.
