Ohio State Buckeyes wide receiver Jeremiah Smith was the talk of the town in college football during his freshman season. He was the top wide receiver on the team during the 2024 college football season and will be for at least the next two seasons.

Smith helped the Buckeyes win another national title and it was the first one for Ohio State since the 2014 season. Had he been eligible for the 2025 NFL Draft, some think he would have been drafted in the top five. There is a chance that he could be the number one overall pick in the 2027 NFL Draft.
Pro Football Focus Thinks That Ohio State Buckeyes Wide Receiver Jeremiah Smith Could Go Number One Overall In the 2027 NFL Draft

Pro Football Focus writer Max Chadwick mentioned in his latest article about how the 2026 NFL Draft is 10 months away, but he believes that the 2027 NFL Draft could be a historic draft class. The 2027 NFL Draft class has NFL scouts potentially drooling over the talent that could come out of college.
Max Chadwick of pro football focus said about Smith potentially being the top selection in 2027,
“Jeremiah Smith is essentially the Trevor Lawrence of wide receivers in terms of how quickly they hit the ground running in college. Both entered college with an immense amount of hype as the No. 1 overall recruit from their respective classes and were among the highest-rated recruits ever. Both immediately lived up to the hype as true freshmen and helped their team win national titles in their debut seasons. Lawrence went first in the 2021 NFL Draft, and Smith could go No. 1 in 2027.
As a true freshman, Smith was the most valuable receiver in the nation according to PFF’s wins above average metric. His 89.8 receiving grade was third in the nation and over four points higher than any other returning wideout. He also led the Power Four with 15 receiving touchdowns while his 1,311 receiving yards trailed only Tetairoa McMillan in that same group.
Smith is an athletic freak at 6-foot-3, 215 pounds with an incredibly refined skillset for someone who turned 19 years old in November. Not only is he the best returning receiver in the country, but he’s the best returning player in college football. Smith is a generational receiver who has already garnered comparisons to all-time greats like Julio Jones, Terrell Owens and Andre Johnson.”
PFF had him ranked first out of all college football wide receivers. Also, Smith actually had 76 receptions for 1,315 yards receiving and 15 touchdowns with the Buckeyes in 2024, along with averaging 17.3 yards per reception. It will be interesting to see if Smith will be able to go over 1,500 yards receiving in each of the next two seasons for Ohio State.
There is no doubt that Smith could be the number one overall pick in the 2027 NFL Draft in Washington D.C. If he is the number one pick, he would be the first wide receiver to go number one in the NFL Draft since Keyshawn Johnson in 1996 from the USC Trojans also.
