The Miami Dolphins are in crisis ahead of their Week 3 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. Dolphins’ quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered a concussion in the loss Thursday night to the Buffalo Bills. On Friday morning, head coach Mike McDaniel gave an update on the Dolphins’ plans for the quarterback position.
It’s unclear when Tua will return to play for the Dolphins. Frankly, it’s unclear if Tua will be ever cleared medically to return to the NFL after suffering a third concussion in as many seasons.
The Miami Dolphins have options in free agency
A few quarterback names came to mind for the team to sign after Tua had to leave the game. Former Dolphins’ first-round pick, Ryan Tannehill, is a free agent. FOX Sports broadcaster and seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady said earlier in the offseason he’d be open to signing with a team this season.
For right now, the Dolphins are rolling with who they have.
The Dolphins plan to start Skylar Thompson
Per Ian Rapoport with the NFL Network, McDaniel said the team plans to use Skylar Thompson as their starting quarterback moving forward. The Dolphins plan to sign another quarterback for depth.
McDaniel didn’t attempt to give a timeline on when he thought Tua could return to play.
“The best thing I can do is not assess what this means from a football standpoint,” McDaniel said. “Timelines give anxiety.”
Thompson went 8/14 for 80 yards when he was brought in for Tua against the Bills on Thursday night. The Dolphins drafted Thompson in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He’s appeared in eight games. He’s 68/119 passing for 614 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions in his career.
