    Should The Seahawks Tank?

The Seattle Seahawks underwent massive changes to their roster this offseason. They are going to be bad, but should the Seahawks tank?

The biggest change is the loss of star quarterback Russel Wilson. But other players are gone as well. Bobby Wagner was released in a particularly jarring fashion. In the loss of those two players, the Seahawks essentially got rid of the faces of the franchise. Jamal Adams is still a Seahawk. Additionally their standout wide receiver DK Metcalf remains in Seattle as well. Tyler Lockett is of course still one of the best deep threats in the game and the seahawks did address some needs through the draft.

    Football Purgatory

The team is indeed objectively worse after these changes, however, they may not be as god-awful as people are projecting. The cupboard is not completely bare, but it is severely depleted. This isn’t necessarily a good thing. The Seahawks may end up stuck in football purgatory. They could end up losing a lot but also winning just enough to miss out on a top draft pick.

When this happens to teams, they end up just becoming perpetually mediocre. It’s hard to find talent in the draft when you’re picking 14th every year. The quickest way to turn the team around is to draft high and draft well.

    Should The Seahawks Tank?

The Seahawks should tank. If they are truly trying to rebuild and want to do it efficiently, they need a high draft pick immediately. The way to get those picks is through playing badly enough to secure a top ten or top five draft pick. The best way to get those picks is for the seahawks to tank.

The Seahawks do in fact have a first and a second-round draft pick in 2023. However, the problem is that they do not have a 2023 third or fourth-round pick. This places much more importance on the first and second-round picks. They need these picks to be as high as possible so that they will have access to the most talented players.

The expectations for this season are already extremely low. Seahawks fans know that this year will be a painful one. The roster is overwhelmingly young at key spots and has a serious lack of talent at the quarterback position. The fans will not be disappointed should the Seahawks choose to tank.

    Will The Seahawks Actually Tank?

The short answer to that question is a hard no. If you know anything about head coach Pete Carroll, you know tanking is not in his DNA. He is fiercely competitive and coaches his player up to be competitive as well. That is what has made him such a good coach in both college and in the NFL.

The Seahawks ownership and front office would have none of this tanking talk either. The Allen family has owned the Seahawks since 1997 and their competitiveness is part of why they love Pete Carroll. Neither the Owner Jody Allen nor Pete Carroll would ever consider tanking.

However in my opinion this is a bit stubborn and self-sabotaging. The last thing the Seahawks need is to have a record of eight and nine this year. If they happen they will be condemning themselves to more years of losing and mediocrity. The most truly competitive thing to do would be to swallow your pride and tank.

This is especially true given the high-quality quarterbacks that may be available in the 2023 draft. Drew Lock and Geno Smith are not the future of the Seahawks. But C.J Stroud, Bryce Young, or Anthony Richardson could be. However, in order to get one of those guys, you will need a top ten or top five draft pick.

The Seahawks need to and definitely should tank, but they won’t. Stubbornness and foolish pride will keep them in football purgatory for years to come.
