Heading into the 2023 NFL offseason, there are a ton of rumors already swirling around. Two teams to keep a very close eye on will be the Chicago Bears, who currently hold the No. 1 overall pick in a deep quarterback draft, and the Seattle Seahawks, who have a ton of decisions to make. A crazy rumor that has been spreading around is that the Bears could trade Justin Fields and select Bryce Young with the top pick, which is a rumor started by former NFL superstar Warren Sapp.
Trading Fields would be a very bold move from the Bears. Fields is coming off of a big second season in the NFL and showed major signs of stardom.
Granted, Young is expected to be a superstar at the NFL level. He is the kind of player that become an all-time great if he reaches his full potential. But, the Bears would be taking a huge risk by trading Fields.
That being said, if the Bears are open to trading Fields, there are quite a few teams around the league that would have interest. Let’s take a look at one team in particular.
Should The Seahawks Pursue A Justin Fields Trade?
One team that would make perfect sense as a trade destination for Fields would be the Seahawks. They are coming off of a surprising season that saw them reach the playoffs even after trading Russell Wilson away. Geno Smith stepped in and performed admirably and has likely earned a new contract from Seattle.
While Smith was great in 2022, the Seahawks should not pass on an opportunity to snag a quarterback like Fields if the chance came around. Smith isn’t a super long-term option, while Fields could be the new face of the franchise for years to come.
Sports Mockery suggested the Seahawks as a potential trade destination for Fields. Their reasoning for why makes a ton of sense.
When watching Fields, people have often compared him to Russell Wilson with his athleticism and the great deep ball. Pete Carroll helped turn Wilson into a future Hall of Famer during their long run in Seattle together. It isn’t a stretch to think he’d immediately know how to craft the offense around what Fields does best. The Seahawks have a big decision regarding free agent quarterback Geno Smith. They have enough draft ammunition to go after Fields if they don’t want to pay him.
Fields ended up completing 60.4 percent of his pass attempts for 2,242 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. His passing numbers weren’t amazing, which is part of the reason that some believe the Bears could actually be open to moving him for a talent like Young. On the ground, however, Fields shredded opposing defenses to the tune of 1,143 yards and eight touchdowns.
For the Seahawks, he would be able to come in and immediately compete in the NFC. Not paying Smith could be a wise decision as well. Smith was great this season, but he is not getting any younger and a big contract may end up backfiring.

So, to answer the question, should the Seahawks pursue a trade for Fields? The easy answer is that they absolutely consider pursuit. Fields could be a complete franchise changer.
Loyalty is a big thing in the NFL though, and Smith definitely deserves to be a starter. It’s a tough choice, but the Seahawks should pick Fields over Smith if that’s what the decision boils down to. Fields is younger, cheaper, and has started showing big-time signs of being a special talent himself.
Expect to continue hearing a ton of rumors surrounding Fields as the draft draws closer. The Seahawks may not have any interest at all and may be content re-signing Smith, but Fields would be very hard to pass on.
