The #16 LSU Tigers must face off against the South Carolina Gamecocks this Saturday in Columbia, South Carolina.
The Tigers have arguably one of their toughest away games of the season as South Carolina provides both energy, and serious talent on the field. Particularly, the Gamecocks defense could become an issue for the Tigers if LSU cannot get rid of the ball quickly. The Tigers could be on upset watch this weekend with such a tough opponent facing off against them.
LSU Tigers Facing Tough Defensive Challenge Against Strong South Carolina Team
The LSU Tigers are scheduled to take on the South Carolina Gamecocks this Saturday after defeating Nicholls State. The Tigers struggled for a while against Nicholls State before fully breaking through on the offensive side of the ball. While LSU got the win, the Gamecocks looked excellent against the Kentucky Wildcats, holding them to just six points and 44 yards passing.
The Gamecocks defense had five sacks, two interceptions, and four forced fumbles against the Wildcats while also scoring a touchdown. South Carolina looked excellent on defense but still struggled to put everything together on the offensive side of the ball. Gamecocks quarterback LaNorris Sellers had an interception and three fumbles against the Wildcats defense.
The LSU Tigers offense is going to have to work the ball down the field and score against the Gamecocks defense in a variety of ways. If LSU tries to attack solely through the air, the Gamecocks will alter their play much like they did against the Wildcats. LSU needs to really open up their playbook against South Carolina on Saturday to ensure they secure the win.
How can the LSU Football Staff Avoid an Upset Loss Against the Gamecocks?
If the LSU Tigers football team is going to avoid a loss, it is going to involve finding a way to stop edge rusher Dylan Stewart. Thus far, nobody has found a way, as the Kentucky Wildcats triple-teamed Stewart last game and he still recorded a sack on the play. The true freshman is a freak of nature and stopping him completely might be out of the question, but limiting him is still possible.
The LSU Tigers are going to have to have two lineman in his direction at all times due to his strength and speed. Stewart can slip a single lineman if he is not fast enough, and a running back just is not enough to slow down the power of Stewart. The LSU Tigers’ offensive line will need to hold strong against Stewart and the rush of the Gamecocks.
On the offensive side of the ball, the LSU Tigers staff needs to scheme up whatever they can to get wide receiver Kyren Lacy the ball. Receiver Chris Hilton Jr is dealing with an ankle injury and seems to still not be 100%, which means Lacy should receive the majority of the looks against South Carolina. Lacy recorded 65 yards and three touchdowns last game against Nicholls State.
Another target that the ball needs to go to is tight end Trey’Dez Green, the 6-foot-7-inch phenom who has not seen much action. Green recorded a touchdown against Nicholls State, but the tight end was someone the LSU Tigers coach Brian Kelly wanted to get involved more. Green is a huge target, literally, and provides incredible athleticism for his size which could be put to great use against the Gamecocks.
