Coming off the Eagles Week 1 performance the second-year receiver DeVonta Smith was targeted four times and did not have a single catch in the game leaving a goose egg on a lot of fantasy owner’s teams. A.J. Brown led the team in targets with 13, catching 10 passes for 155 yards throughout the game. Followed by Dallas Goedert’s 4 targets, catching 3 passes for 60 yards and Kenneth Gainwell’s 4 targets for 2 receptions and 12 yards. The Eagles ran the ball 39 times and passed the ball 32 times against the Lions and ultimately are a run-first offense. What does this mean for Smith’s production throughout the rest of the season after facing PFF’s 25th ranked Lions secondary without a single catch?

As a rookie, Smith was targeted on 19.5% of routes and on Sunday it was only 7.5%. However, the Eagles have the third easiest schedule in the 2022 NFL Season according to CBS Sports. Smith will get his opportunities to make big plays as the number two wide receiver on this electric Eagles offense. He remains an elusive flex option the rest of the season. After A.J. Brown’s monstrous game against the Lions, teams are going to be more concerned about him getting open and create opportunity for Smith to make some plays. For now if you own DeVonta Smith don’t drop him because it was only the first game of the season.

Headed into Week 2 the Eagles will face the Vikings at Lincoln Financial Field for Monday Night Football. Smith is projected to see 6 targets for 4 receptions and 50 yards receiving which accumulates to around 10.4 fantasy points in a PPR league. The way the Vikings were able to shut down the Packers last week only allowing them to score 7 points made a statement to me, which is don’t start Smith this week. Make sure you still keep him on your team for following weeks to come that present a more favorable matchup where he could see a touchdown or more. My prediction for Smith’s turnout this week is 7 targets for 5 receptions and 63 yards.
