In Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders’ opening practice on Wednesday, things didn’t look good overall.
The Athletic’s Zac Jackson posted on X throughout the practice, sharing the other that quarterbacks took reps in each portion of the day.
During every drill, Sanders was the last man up. 40-year-old Joe Flacco sat out a few sequences, but when he participated, he went first.
A veteran competitor, Kenny Pickett, went next. Then fellow NFL rookie Dillon Gabriel followed, chosen 50 picks before Sanders. Only after all of them had been gone could Sanders take the field:
The Browns followed a similar procedure during OTAs, essentially sticking to the script of veterans and then the rookie who was drafted earlier followed by the rookie who was drafted later.
For Sanders to stick around the team long term, and maybe challenge for a starting spot eventually, he’s going to have to seize his chances when they come.
But right now, Sanders is stuck at the bottom of the totem pole.
