Shedeur Sanders was definitely not an option for the Cleveland Browns at all and was only selected because he will come cheap for the team, according to sports writer Mary Kay Cabot. Sanders was picked by the Browns in the 144th spot all the way in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL draft.
The Cleveland Browns were definitely in the market for a new quarterback or two in the recently concluded draft, but chose to go with Dillon Gabriel as their first QB pick in the 94th spot. The Browns pocketed Mason Graham as their very first selection in the 2025 NFL draft. As a result of being a last option for the Browns, it doesn’t look like Sanders will be the starting quarterback anytime soon for the team.
“It won’t be easy, considering the Browns passed on Sanders six times in the draft, including at No. 94 when they opted for Gabriel out of Oregon over the player widely-regarded throughout the pre-draft cycle as the No. 2 prospect behind Cam Ward. The Browns were perfectly prepared for the draft to come and go without Sanders on their roster, and only traded up to grab him because the ‘steep discount’ was too good to pass up.” Mary Kay Cabot wrote for cleveland.com about Shedeur Sanders.

Shedeur Sanders played college football for the Jackson State Tigers from 2021 to 2022 and then for the Colorado Tigers from 2023 to 2024 before coming to the NFL. Sanders is the youngest son of former NFL and MLB player Deion Sanders and is touted to be a highly talented quarterback.

Shedeur Sanders Won’t Be Starting QB, Says Eric Mangini
That Shedeur Sanders will not be starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns any time soon was not only remarked by Mary Kay Cabot in her recent article, but also discussed by Eric Mangini, who was formerly the head coach for the Browns.

On ‘First Things First’, Mangini even went on to advise the Browns not to place Sanders as their starting quarterback just because of pressure from the public and the hype surrounding the young quarterback.

The Cleveland Browns will be desperate to boost their record after putting up a very sub-par performance in the previous season. Last year, the Browns finished at the bottom of the pile in the AFC North after winning only three games in the season and losing 14.
