While Shedeur Sanders did not get selected early in the 2025 NFL draft, he is at least now in the league, with the Cleveland Browns using a fifth-round pick to acquire the former Colorado Buffaloes star quarterback. But becoming a pro and succeeding in the league are two completely different things.
Although he was drafted late, Sanders still has work to do to prove that he belongs in the NFL, among which is whether he could elevate the Browns’ quarterback room. However, at least one college football head coach doubts the young QB can make that happen, least in 2025.
A coach who faced Colorado in 2024 said Sanders could end up being a strong NFL starter but understood the concerns about bringing him in as a likely backup initially.
“I see him competing hard on the grass, trying to win the job, making the team better,” the coach said, “but making that room better?”
Shedeur Sanders has work to do to win at least the QB2 role in 2025

It is hard to tell at the moment whether Sanders will even be considered a starter for the Browns in 2025.
Deshaun Watson could be held for the entire 2025 campaign, given his injuries and the risk of Cleveland losing millions of dollars via insurance policy if he gets hurt again, but the Browns also still have Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, plus another rookie QB in Dillion Gabriel, who was taken a couple of rounds earlier than Sanders.
That’s five quarterbacks in the fold right now for Cleveland, which might have to let go of one or two signal-callers by Week 1. For now, a reasonable outlook for Sanders is to be, at best, a QB2 for the Browns, who were last in the NFL in 2024 with just an average of 15.2 points per game.
