Shane Steichen needs to find a starting quarterback

First-year head coach Shane Steichen has a busy offseason with the Indianapolis Colts. The former Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator will look to improve their offense next season. The Colts will need to do so with a new starting quarterback. They released Matt Ryan on March 15. The Colts brought in Gardner Minshew via free agency. They are expected to draft a quarterback in April, as the Colts own the fourth overall pick.

Should the Colts draft a top quarterback prospect in the top four, Steichen would have to decide when to let the rookie start. And that could mean keeping Minshew as a backup. According to Brenna White with the NFL, Steichen hinted to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network that the starting quarterback job would be a competition:

“Right now, obviously, he’s coming in to just compete and be the best he can be, you know, and that’s where we’re going,” Steichen said on if Minshew will be named the starter. “That’s where we feel he’s at right now and that’s his role right now.”

That’s the way the Colts should go about it. If the rookie quarterback is the best player, they should start. If Minshew can be the best quarterback as the young signal caller learns the ropes, Minshew should lead the Colts’ offense in 2023.
