The Green Bay Packers needed to fix its wide receiver room in the offseason after a true number one wide receiver did not emerge onto the scene in the 2024 NFL season. This is one of the reasons why Green Bay selected wide receiver Matthew Golden from the Texas Longhorns with the 23rd overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Golden is expected to be one of the starting wide receivers in the Packers offense for the 2025 NFL season. One player who is already thrilled to have him on the team is quarterback Jordan Love. Golden was the number one wide receiver option for quarterback Quinn Ewers with Texas during the 2024 college football season. How has Golden looked so far in offseason programs with Green Bay?
Green Bay Packers Insider Reveals Potential Role Matthew Golden For 2025 NFL Season
Rob Demovsky of espn.com covers the Packers and he has been paying attention to what Golden has done so far in the offseason during OTAs and mandatory minicamp. Demovsky said about the former Longhorns wide receiver,
“It didn’t take long for Golden to catch Jordan Love‘s eye. The quarterback was immediately impressed with just about everything he has seen from Golden: “I think from the get-go, from day one when he got here, he’s showcased kind of just the versatility he has running routes, the speed he has and his ability to catch,” Love said. With Christian Watson still rehabbing from ACL surgery, Golden has gotten plenty of run with the starters. If he’s not an immediate starter, he appears set for a significant role along with the likes of Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks.”
Golden will be one of the starting wide receivers for the Packers entering the 2025 season. Doubs and Reed will be the other starting wide receivers on the depth chart. Watson will miss a large chunk of the 2025 NFL season because of the torn ACL injury he suffered in Week 18 of the 2024 NFL season against the Chicago Bears.
Green Bay has not had a wide receiver go over 1,000 yards in the last two seasons. Golden has a chance to go over 1,000 yards during his rookie season. It appears as if Love is already trusting him on the field and it will be interesting to see how they will look during training camp leading up to the 2025 NFL season.
