It’s that time of year again…the SEC media days, or as I look at it, the State of the Union for the Conference. There were business as usual moments, and there were some funny moments here and there. The funniest thing that happened was when Ole Miss Coach Lane Kiffin was asked to sign a mustard bottle referring to the time they played Tennessee last season and the fans started throwing stuff onto the field including a mustard bottle…not packets, an actual bottle. It’s funny when I go to a Memphis Tigers game or a Memphis Redbirds game (Triple A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals), and I always see a message on the jumbotron that says, “Stop littering…Nobody trashes Tennessee,” and then I look to the Volunteers fan beside me and give a look of oh really? There was another funny moment when Vanderbilt Coach Clark Lea said, “We know in time Vanderbilt football will be the best football program in the country.” (If you need a moment to stop reading this article for a several-minute laugh, I completely understand.) But I’m sure you want to hear how my team The Alabama Crimson Tide will do this year. Quarterback Bryce Young, even though he won the Heisman trophy and the SEC Championship game, he still viewed last season as a failure, and I understand. This is a warning to the entire SEC that I’m sure you already know…there is nothing in this Conference more deadly than a hungry Alabama team. The thing that also interested me was the drama between Coach Saban and his former assistant Jimbo Fisher. Last year Jimbo ended the undefeated streak that Saban had against his former assistants. There was some offseason drama of Jimbo’s Texas A&M team had the number one recruiting class in the country, usually held by either Alabama or Georgia recently. Nick apparently accused Jimbo of buying each player leading to some drama throughout the summer, but apparently for the SEC media days they both said that they had no ill will toward another and they are over that. Whether that is the case or not, I’m still very interested in the Alabama vs Texas A&M game this upcoming October. In conclusion, with the SEC media days done, we are officially counting down to the most wonderful time of the year. We are 43 days, 5 hours, 17 minutes, and 36 seconds (at the writing of this article) until the season starts. The traditions will come back from the chants of Roll Tide at Bryant Denny to the Geaux Tigers at Tiger Stadium at LSU. From Rocky Top to Hotty Toddy, the South will be preparing for the best time of the year…the start of SEC football season.
