SEC football, largely considered the most profound and best conference in the sport, has had at least one representative in the College Football Playoff since its inaugural season in 2014. During that span, the SEC has won six titles, housed five Heisman Trophy winners, and had four first-overall NFL draft picks. With the conference producing top-end talent and the elite roster facing off in hyper-competitive matchups, Netflix wants to get in on the action via a partnership.
On Thursday, according to a report by On3 Sports, Netflix is eyeing a deal with the SEC to start a television series similar to their hit show, ‘Drive to Survive.’ The NFL has ‘Hard Knocks’ on HBO, but Netflix, which has partnered with the PGA and F1 to publish a docuseries, is looking to strike a deal with the NCAA’s top college football division in hopes of making a much-desired miniseries.
Netflix: Nearing TV Deal with SEC Football
Netflix is nearing a deal with the SEC football conglomeration in hopes of making a series similar to ‘Drive to Survive’ and ‘Full Swing.’ According to the report published by The Athletic, details remain unknown, but one particular is that each school would need to ‘opt-in’ to partake in the show. After conference realignment, the SEC now houses 16 schools, with the addition of the Texas Longhorns and the Oklahoma Sooners. Additionally, early reports indicate that the show could mirror the ‘SEC Insider’ series on the SEC Network.
Netflix’s current sports shows, ‘Drive to Survive’ and ‘Full Swing,’ have been massive successes on the streaming platform. Per IMDB, ‘Drive to Survive’ has an 8.5 star rating (out of 10) and won an Emmy for Outstanding Documentary Series. Meanwhile, ‘Full Swing,’ featuring elite golfers Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler, Rory McIlroy, and Collin Morikawa, among others, earned high marks.
SEC Football: Eyeing Another Star-Studded Season
Last year, the SEC did not have a representative in the College Football Playoff Championship for the first time since the 2014 season. However, plenty of top talent shined in the country’s toughest conference. LSU Tigers quarterback Jayden Daniels won the Heisman Trophy Award after a 50-touchdown season, while Missouri’s Cody Schrader finished third in the nation regarding rushing yards (1,627).
According to CBS Sports, despite powerhouses Alabama and Georgia reupping already elite rosters, the top returner among SEC football players is Tennessee Volunteers edge rusher James Pearce Jr. after posting 14.5 TFLs and 10 sacks last year. Meanwhile, Missouri receiver Luther Burden, LSU offensive tackle Will Campbell, Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe, and Georgia quarterback Carson Beck will return for the 2024 season.
