The Seattle Seahawks are coming off a much-needed BYE and will travel to Santa Clara, California, to face the San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Seahawks plan to have a new player start in a crucial position on the defense. The player to wear the green dot on defense has been changed.
The Seattle Seahawks plan to have their newcomer wear the green dot

When ready, Ernest Jones IV will take over as the green dot wearer (the one with direct communication with the defensive play-caller) for the Seahawks defense. The team acquired Jones IV from the Tennessee Titans on October 23 for Jerome Baker and a 2025 fourth-round pick. He will take over as the starting middle linebacker since they moved on from a veteran.

The Seattle Seahawks parted ways with leading tackler

According to Brady Henderson of ESPN, the Seahawks plan to part ways with veteran middle linebacker Tyrel Dodson. Dodson started the first nine games as the starting middle linebacker and green dot wearer in his first season with the Seahawks. He recorded 71 tackles, five TFLs, two sacks, two pass deflections, and one forced fumble in 98% of defensive snaps.
Another major shakeup to the Seahawks’ inside linebacker corps: I’m told they plan to release Tyrel Dodson, who’s started all nine games this season.

As Henderson points out, Tyrice Knight or Drake Thomas will start at the weak-side linebacker position alongside Ernest Jones IV at middle linebacker. Knight, a fourth-round pick, has started two games in his rookie season, recording 23 tackles and one TFL in 23% of defensive snaps. The Seahawks like him, and now he has a chance to audition for the long-term starting linebacker job.
This move clears the way for either rookie fourth-round pick Tyrice Knight or Drake Thomas to play weak-side linebacker, with newly-acquired Ernest Jones IV now playing middle linebacker.
