Much like the Minnesota Vikings, Buffalo Bills, and Kansas City Chiefs, the Seattle Seahawks haven’t lost a single game yet this season. Turns out, ESPN identified the team’s biggest issue on offense, one that they need to address right away.
Despite their impressive 3-0 start, the Seahawks are grappling with significant concerns regarding their offensive line. The performance of the guards, particularly Laken Tomlinson and Anthony Bradford, has drawn scrutiny. While Tomlinson has excelled as a run blocker, his pass protection has been inconsistent. Bradford, on the other hand, has struggled in both aspects, committing six penalties and allowing multiple sacks, prompting head coach Mike Macdonald to consider giving rookie Christian Haynes more opportunities.
Haynes has seen limited action, but his potential may provide a needed boost to the struggling guard positions. The Seahawks have also explored adding veteran lineman Jason Peters, who has experience playing both tackle and guard, to offer additional depth and competition.
Quarterback Geno Smith has performed well despite these challenges, and running backs Ken Walker III and Zach Charbonnet have found success on the ground. However, with tougher opponents looming on the schedule, including teams like the Detroit Lions and San Francisco 49ers, the offensive line’s issues could be more pronounced.
ESPN Identifies Seattle Seahawks Biggest Issue on Offense Ahead of NFL Week 4
After three games, the fans and critics have gained a good look at Seattle’s offense this season. According to an NFL analysis by ESPN’s Kevin Seifert, the Seahawks need to focus on their pass protection.
Week 3 ranking: 10
Biggest issue on offense: Pass protection
The Seahawks rank 30th in pass block win rate (46.1%) and 23rd in allowing pressure (33.0%). They’re 16th in sacks allowed per dropback (7.1%), but that comes with the caveat that QB Geno Smith is getting the ball out at the sixth-fastest rate of any quarterback (2.66 seconds on average).
Life won’t get any easier for Seattle’s offensive line now that it’ll be down to its third option at right tackle for the foreseeable future. Stone Forsythe is replacing George Fant, who had been filling in for Abraham Lucas before landing on injured reserve. Lucas isn’t expected to come off the physically unable to perform list until midseason at the earliest.
Macdonald acknowledges the need for stability and performance as they navigate their current lineup. The situation remains fluid, and the Seahawks must address these offensive line deficiencies to maintain their winning momentum.
With upcoming games against stronger teams, the Seahawks’ ability to adapt and improve their offensive line will be critical to their playoff aspirations. The pressure is on as they seek to solidify their roster and ensure that they can continue their successful start to the season.
