Geno Smith has been surprisingly successful in many different areas as the Seattle Seahawks’ starting quarterback. He’s taken his team to the playoffs, made it two Pro Bowls, and even claimed NFL Comeback Player of the Year. But one annoying hurdle escapes him—beating the San Francisco 49ers.
Seattle’s starter has yet to engineer a win against the 49ers. Geno Smith has lost five straight to the Seahawks’ divisional rival, four of those games coming while he started. He’s attempted 72 percent of his passes in those contests and thrown for over 800 yards, but has battled to get past San Francisco’s defense. But most notably, he’s been sacked 12 times, including a costly strip-sack in the 2022 Wild Card playoff loss that turned a close game into a 41-23 blowout.

All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner and star edge rusher Nick Bosa continually put pressure on Smith from the 49ers’ defense. Keeping the pressure on Geno and forcing turnovers has been the key. If Smith is to escape another beating, Seattle’s offensive line will have to offer better protection. Seattle can’t be one-dimensional against a smart 49ers defense. Even if Geno is throwing it well they should remember to spread the ball around.
Geno Smith’s Cautious Optimism In Tonight’s Matchup.
The 49ers are without safety Talanoa Hufanga and defensive tackle Javon Hargrave. The key, though, for Geno Smith to finally win for the first time is if Seattle’s roaring offense — featuring a Ken Walker III and a wide receiver corps featuring DK Metcalf and Jaxon Smith-Njigba — can get rolling.
Both of these teams are fighting for their spot in the NFC West and this one will have a lot of fan interest. It’s more than just another Thursday Night game for Geno Smith, it’s a chance to finally overcome a major hurdle in his Seahawks career. Will the fifth time be a charm?
