The Seattle Seahawks needed some help on defense and many connected them to Jalen Carter. While he was on the board, Pete Carroll decided to go a different route. The Seattle Seahawks took Devon Witherspoon, the cornerback out of Illinois.
Seattle Seahawks Select Devon Witherspoon
Witherspoon had a heck of a year for the Fighting Illini. While he is undersized, he is not afraid to get into the action. The Seahawks’ defense struggled last year and needed to find some more talent. Witherspoon can hopefully become the next great corner for Seattle. The crazy thing about this pick is that they were not supposed to have it. The Russell Wilson trade allowed the Seahawks to get one of the best corners in the draft.
What Can Seattle Do In The NFC?
The NFC is the weaker of the two conferences by far. Try and name the top five quarterbacks in the NFC right now. It’s very difficult. If Geno Smith can have a season like he had last year, the Seahawks could find themselves in the mix in the NFC. Witherspoon can hopefully become a day-one starter and make an immediate impact for Seattle.
The Seahawks took a big swing with Devon Witherspoon. Many wondered whether they would trade out of the pick but they stood firm and took a top defensive player in the draft. Can Seattle return to the playoffs next season? They have filled a hole and look to be well on their way.
