Sean McVay had a lot of praise for the New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye after seeing him up close and personal. McVay is one of the most brilliant offensive minds the NFL has ever seen, and he thinks Maye is the real deal, and that he’s going to dominate the league for a long time.
McVay is not the only one who sees incredible things out of Maye, as tons of Patriots players have been gushing about their 22-year-old quarterback, who has done nothing but impress his peers over and over again. While it may be too soon to tell, McVay sees greatness in Drake.
Sean McVay Spoke At Length About How Good Drake Maye Is
The Los Angeles Rams head coach sees a very bright future for Maye after just playing one game against him. Obviously, McVay did not do any studying on Maye during the draft as there was no chance the team would or could take him, but McVay saw some incredible things from Maye and went on a long tangent about him.
Maye had one of, if not his best games so far as a starter against the Rams, completing 30 of 40 passes for 282 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception in their close 28-22 loss on Sunday. Maye has shown that he is a real leader and that he has all the talent in the world. After McVay saw what Maye could do, he did not hold back with the compliments for the young rising star:
“He looks like a stud,” McVay said, via Mike Reiss of ESPN. “I didn’t do too much work on him coming out [of college]. I do know a lot of people that studied him really hard, that I truly respect their opinions, and they loved what he was all about. You can just see the impact he has on his teammates. He looks like he’s going to be a special player for a long time.”
“I thought he did a great job making plays in the pocket, was patient, taking some underneath check-downs where guys were able to create. We had tighter coverages and he was able to fit the ball into tight windows,” McVay said.
Many of the Patriots players have been saying this for the past couple of weeks now, and it seems that the whole roster has been super impressed with Maye and how he has taken up a leadership role at such a young age. Maye has one of the worst-receiving cores, run games, and offensive lines in the league, and he is still showing tons of signs of greatness.
I don’t think there has ever been such a young player who has come in and taken on such a leadership role in their rookie season. Maye is going to only get better, and the Patriots have the most cap space in the NFL this offseason. If they can get him some protection, and some receivers, the sky is the limit for what Maye can do.
Here are a few quotes from Patriots players about how impressed they are with the 22 year old rookie:
Davon Godchaux was quoted gushing about his quarterback:
“That’s young Josh Allen 2.0,” Godchaux told reporters, including Evan Lazar of Patriots.com. “He looks amazing. I love watching him on the sideline. … I tell the guys all the time that he plays like Josh Allen 2.0.
“I played Josh Allen in Miami his rookie year, and he didn’t look that good, and Josh Allen is a phenomenal player now. MVP-type player. Drake looks better than Josh did his rookie year.”
One of Maye’s receivers Kendrick Bourne could not stop complimenting Maye:
“Drake is just phenomenal,” Bourne said, via Phil Perry. “He keeps showing it, week in and week out. … When you have someone like that it encourages you to go harder. .. (That TD pass) was different. … That might’ve been the longest play I’ve ever been a part of.”
The star cornerback for the team Christian Gonzalez backed his teammates’ statements by saying:
“That’s Drake. Nobody was surprised, honestly. He makes plays like that all the time,” Gonzalez said, via the Boston Herald’s Zack Cox.
With just 6 starts to his career, Maye has already won over the entire Patriots locker room, and the best offensive mind in the game in McVay. While the Patriots are not playing for the playoffs, they have barely been spoken about, but Maye is going to shock the NFL world soon enough.
The Patriots have finally found their franchise guy since the GOAT left their building, and with quotes coming out like this from opposing coaches, Maye is clearly doing everything right in his rookie season.
When Maye starts to take over the NFL, many will be shocked, but McVay and many others who know how good Drake is, are just going to be proven right.
